Amazon.com Review
By combining a regular coffeemaker and espresso machine, this 1500-watt appliance makes it possible to satisfy every coffee craving with a single, compact unit. Separate water tanks permit simultaneous coffee and espresso brewing for satisfying everyone at once. The espresso-machine side includes a steam nozzle with a foolproof frothing attachment for creating coffee drinks like cappuccino and café latté. Making espresso follows tradition: tamping the proper amount of coffee into a filter basket inside a filter holder, twisting the filter holder onto the machine, pouring water into the machine's boiler, and twisting the control knob, which instantly goes from the off position to brewing espresso or frothing milk. Depending on the amount of water, up to four 2-ounce cups will then be brewed into an 8-ounce glass carafe.

Making regular coffee also adheres to tradition: inserting a filter into the filter basket, spooning in coffee, pouring water into the coffeemaker's tank, and pressing a button. Depending on the amount of water, up to ten 5-ounce cups of coffee will then be brewed into a 50-ounce glass carafe, which sits on a warming plate. Removing the carafe from the warming plate pauses the brewing process for 20 seconds to accommodate a midbrew pour. A programmable digital clock/timer makes it possible to brew wake-up coffee at a selected time up to 24 hours in advance. For safety, the machine automatically shuts off two hours after brewing. The machine has a bright plastic exterior, measures 13 inches wide, 12 inches high, and 10 inches deep, weighs 4-3/4 pounds, and carries a one-year warranty against defects. An illustrated booklet provides clear operating instructions. --Fred Brack

Editor's note: This item may arrive with water inside from the manufacturer's pressure test. This is a normal occurrence and doesn't indicate a problem with the machine.

Great unit despite the neurotoxic tank and handle assembly4
A year ago, I purchased one of these for my fiancee. My initial impression was very positive, but I didn't want to rush into writing a review without putting it through the wringer (so to speak). Well, after countless latte's the Caffe Bistro is still pumping out quality espresso and foaming great quanities of milk. It's very solid in construction and brain-dead simple to use, even without its very well written owner's manual. I do have a few comments to make, however, that might serve as minor caveats to anyone seeking to purchase a combo espresso/coffee maker:

[1] While the manual states that the handle assembly is dishwasher safe, I would strongly recommend *against* putting it in the dishwasher. I'm not sure what it is about my fiancee's dishwasher crystals, but after one go-around in the 'washer, the aluminum portion of the handle assembly turned very dark grey (almost a slate color)--completely oxidized. This doesn't affect performance in the least, but it does make the it somewhat less pretty to look at. Wash it by hand and all should go well. If you forget and find yourself with an oxidized cup, simply go at it with a brillo-type (mildly abrasive) pad and your favorite dishwashing soap (e.g. Palmolive, Ivory, etc.). After a few minutes of scrubbing, the aluminum cup will be back to its original lustre.

[2] The manual makes frequent mention of a "perfect froth attachment" but doesn't really explain what it is or what it does or why it's there. In short, it's the second little miniature stem to the side of the steam stem whose purpose is to funnel in cool air from the room via the top of the attachment via the Bernoulli effect (the same principle that perfume atomizers with the squishy rubber bulbs use), thus providing the "perfect" amount of air needed to make foam. While cleaning the frother, the little rubber tip on the top of the attachment rolled under the stove and was effectively lost. The next time I tried to froth some milk, I got a whole bunch of air and very little steam, resulting in just a rapidly moving cup of slightly warm milk (and a whole lot of noise). I figured out that if you just remove the "perfect froth" attachment, you can get "perfect froth" by simply holding the nozzle just a tiny bit above the surface of the milk--just the way one would do with a machine without such an attachment. I'm now actually glad we lost the tip of the PFA since now the steam nozzle is much easier to clean. :-)

[3] Regular cleaning of your frothing nozzle is imperative. I like to keep a straightened paper clip next to the machine to clean out the tip after every use. If you don't clean it regularly, old milk and hard water deposits will result in a partially or completely blocked nozzle. You should also use a small wrench to remove the tip of the nozzle once a month and make sure you clean it from the inside--a paper clip can only get so much.

[4] The nozzle on this unit is just a bit too long, even without the PFA in place. We purchased a stainless steel frothing pitcher from Fourbucks, er...Starbucks, and found it to be just about 1/4" too tall (or the nozzle just about 1/4" too long) to fit under without tipping either the pitcher or the machine. I'm sorry I don't have a measurement handy, but it's only a very minor annoyance, nothing worth losing sleep over.

[5] I am concerned about the use of aluminum in the unit. The grounds cup, the handle assembly and apparently the tank in which the water is heated are all made of aluminum, and aluminum is a known neurotoxin (i.e. it's bad for you) and it is thought to be a contributing factor in the contraction of Alzheimer's Disease. If I had known that the Caffe Bistro used so much aluminum in the parts that contact the water, I probably would not have purchased it, but buying an espresso machine with stainless steel parts would have been prohibitively expensive. :-(

In short, it's a great unit and has served wonderful lattes and coffees for the past year or so, and it's a great value...that is, if you don't mind ingesting material that is a known to do the body harm.

Good reasons (and tips) to buy this machine4
If you want a machine that makes excellent espresso (for shots, machiattos, or espresso con panas) the Il Bistro is adequate. The espresso is somewhat diluted and you don't get a lot of crema. Of course, you could try adding more espresso grinds and cutting the brewing cycle short to get better espresso. However, this machine steams milk well and gives an impressive amount of froth. As a barista I've heard a lot of people complain about not getting enough froth from their espresso machines, but that is not a problem here. The instructions only tell you to steam for 1-2 mins., which is not going to get your milk hot enough so I suggest using a thermometer. It's also pretty easy to clean. If you want to keep the steam wand unclogged, remove the perfect frother attachment (after every use) and place under running water for several seconds, then briefly turn the steamer on to expel excess liquid from the wand (careful, the steam and wand are very hot). The other features, the digital clock and programable coffee machine, are great and very convenient. I'm an espresso lover, however, so the espresso machine features were enough to win me over. I've been using my machine almost everyday (sometimes 2-3 times a day during school exams) and I haven't had any problems. I've also been happy with my lattes, so I recommend this product.

Solid performer5
I have the previous version of this machine which I have used practically every day for about the last 10 YEARS! And it works just fine. The large 10 cup pot/section is easy to clean, easy to pour, makes good coffee. The espresso part I have used daily since returning from Spain this last April, and it works very well. I really can't think of anything this machine should do that it doesn't. When using the frothing milk attachment you are going to have to clean it, but you really can't make great coffee without making a little mess. Does everything it should, does it well, been doing it for a long time.

Customer Reviews

My favorite appliance...4
Using a Chemex requires water to be heated in a tea kettle prior to brewing, and it requires a finer ground than what auto-drip machines ask for. After the water is brought to a boil, it's important to wait for it to cool just slightly (about 30 seconds) and then you need to wet the grounds in the filter, wait for them to drain, and then fill the pot with water. Want more than a single cup of coffee? You wait for your first pour to brew, and then fill the filter again.

Some advantages over other forms of coffee brewing:

1. Taste: I don't know how it does it, but the filter does keep your coffee from being bitter.

2. Cleanability: Users can keep all necessary components clean (anyone who's brewed water and vinegar through their coffee maker to kill off a bitter taste that wasn't there when you bought it understands this plight). Oftentimes, the most aggressive criticism of the Chemex is its ponderousness to clean because it's not possible to get your hand into the reservoir. Some people prefer to add hot water and soap and give it a good rinse, which is fine if you clean the moment you empty the pot, but if you're like me and you let the remaining sip or two sit until a nice coffee stain is on the glass, then you need some good 'ol fashion friction to get it clean. The best thing I've found: a baby bottle cleaner. It's narrow enough to get into the reservoir and the angle can be adjusted to scrap the walls, too. Brilliant!

3. Electricity Free: As long as you can boil water, you can have coffee.

4. Mud/Sludge: French press and stove-top espresso-style brewing always leaves a thick slime at the bottom of an otherwise rich cup of coffee. Don't get me wrong: I think that's good (I use a French Press when I'm in the mood), but the cone on a Chemex doesn't allow that at all.

5. Style/Size: the Chemex coffee pot is a relic (designed in the 40s) and the wood cuff with rawhide tie screams simplicity and elegance and it's a wonderful, minimalist sight on any kitchen counter (and unlike electric coffee makers, easy to move if you need the space).

Some drawbacks any purchaser should consider:

1. Time: it does take 5 - 10 minutes of labor to get the morning cup of coffee.

2. Cones: you can't run over to Wal-Mart when you use the last filter; you need to find a specialty store or go online, which means you need to plan ahead.

3. Cold Coffee: no electric hot plate (thank god) means coffee not poured and consumed immediately gets cold quickly. You can buy a wire guard and a glass lid so your Chemex can be warmed on the stovetop. I think that's more labor added to an already laborious endeavor. Just have a warmed thermos ready and use that to store any unused coffee.

4. Learning Curve: It does take some time to get the grind right, the amount right and the water level right to find a cup which caters to your tongue.

5. Cleanability: I know this is in the advantages column, as well, but it's worth mentioning that a lot of people hate cleaning these things. To submerge it does mean pulling off the wood cuff (which is a small pain) else it will get nasty over time.

Best Coffee Maker5
Simple. Elegant. and produces (almost) the best cup of coffee (second only to a Hario Syphon). The labor is negligible if you consider the benefits.
Since the filter is cone shaped, it eliminates sludge and provides a consistent filtration. I have used a Chemex since 1989 - yes, I have cracked a few, but some vendors have the hand-blown version which is a sturdier glass.

Great Coffee, Great Design, Fun and Easy to Use5
The Chemex coffee maker adds personality to a kitchen and to the morning coffee ritual. It is an example of minimalist functional design. The glass is chemically neutral and clean. The wood enables hands to pour when the glass is hot. The string enables the wood to come loose for the dishwasher. Every detail has a function for which it is ideally suited.

I like to use two standard cone filters instead of Chemex filters. I put one inside the other and wet them. The result is strong enough to support the coffee and water, provides a fine filter for clean coffee, and slows the passage of water for longer extraction time. This works wonderfully, with only the occasional messy disaster.

The resulting coffee is as dark or light as you choose to make, but weirdly clean and sediment free.

The process itself is calming, and clean-up is a cinch.

Update after 1 year--

Some downsides - a) the glass is thin - mine has lasted over a year with occasional use. My friend's split in half due to a sudden temperature change in the sink. b) the wood and leather are organic and suffer the fate of organic things.

Kalorik Coffee Maker5
"Kalorik coffee maker looks and works great. 40.5oz. stainless thermos carafe is nice but wouldn't call it 10 cups. The cone type filters(none included)seem to use less coffee. The 24hr digital clock with program timer is easy to set. Hot plate has 2hr auto shut-off. Great coffee maker for the price and it looks like it would be a much more expensive model."

Kalorik Coffee Maker4
I bought this coffee maker as a gift for our son, Alan. He received it within one week. He is very pleased with the coffee maker --makes coffee one would expect in a much more expensive coffee maker.

Coleman 9-Cup Coffee Enamelware Percolator (Blue) 4
tried 2 different percolators recently that were not well constructed compared to the coleman (lids did not interlock into the bases securely to prevent coffee from splattering all over stove). That's not the case with this coleman; it's a solid percolator. My only complaint is the lack of a clear glass piece on the top of the lid to identify when the coffee actually starts to perk.

Great camping or home percolator4
This is coated with a very hard enamel that should hold up for years in the outdoors. It can also be great for home use. The actual bin where you put the coffee is kind of thin but works. I think is was made this way to make it light as possible for transport to the campsite. It really looks great on any retro stove you may have or looks fine on a new one too. I like this product that makes coffee anywhere, over a fire or on a stove.

Enamelware percolator4
Simple and useful accessory. You can never have enough hot water in camp. We use this one to make tea, and to heat dish water. The lack of a clear top regulates this to the lesser tasks. I like to see when my coffee starts to percolate so I use one with a clear top for that. Overall a nice addition to the semi-primitive kitchen.

Customer Reviews

Simple coffeemaker4
This device is about as simple as it gets to make coffee with the exception of the way my cousins make it in Brazil; there they hang a kind of cotton sock on a ring stand and pour hot water through. Out comes the most delicious "cafezhino" or however it's spelled. The Melitta works on the same filtration principle.

A few notes: 10 cups means 10 European cups or about 2 to 3 healthy robust, caffeine-addict American mugs. And the coffee won't stay hot as this is a glass pitcher or carafe with no warming element. Try heating the carafe first, or pouring the coffee into a thermos or insulated carafe. Wait, it's only making a few AMERICAN cups so just drink up and don't worry about it getting cold.

Simply the best coffee ever5
After my last coffee maker died (the fourth or fifth one in just eight years), I was sick of the electric coffee pot. This very simple set-up was inexpensive and doesn't have any electrical parts to break.

The best thing, though, is that this makes the best coffee ever. Seriously. Here's the method: I grind my beans right before brewing. I pour boiling water over the grounds, just enough to soak them. Then I pour again to fill the filter with water. And I stir with a spoon. Pour and stir, pour and stir, until all the water has gone through. Simple, easy, and amazingly good coffee. It's way better than anything I got from my overpriced electrical machines.

Hidden gem5
I went to every box store looking for this. Not one to be found. All were selling the exact same automatic systems that, surprisingly, are much more expensive. I was able to locate one at a small independent department store (not many of those) and at Amazon (at a much better price).

A pox on box stores.

I am pretty much convinced that all coffee makers can make good coffee if:

1. The beans are good
2. The beans are ground freshly and of the right grind for the situation
3. The water is good and of the right temperature
4. The filter is good.
5. The ratio of coffee grounds to water is correct.

After all that, it is a matter of taste. Strong, mild, decaf, even politically correct, there is coffee for everyone and it is easy to buy almost anywhere now.

The Melitta doesn't get in the way of brewing the coffee you like. There is nothing in the design that makes it hard to use or compromises the taste. And, although it doesn't have 1/10 the style of the Chemex, it does not crack easily and is very affordable. I wonder, though, about how long they will be on the market. They are hard to find and I would guess that Melitta would much rather sell the automatic ones. There are piles of No.4 filters everywhere, but the No.6 Melitta size is hard to find.

Oh, and for those that lauded the unit because it "doesn't use electricity" might want to think about that...clue:do you only eat raw food?

Cool Tool!5
I was able to get a really good deal on this and the single serve tea tool. This enables me to make french-press like coffee on the road - all I need is my own ground coffee (the carrying case even has a compartment to carry it with me.) and boiling water. It takes a bit to get used to drinking hot coffee and tea through a straw, but it's better for your teeth.

Cool way to Drink your Coffee5
I was originally looking for a single serve coffee maker. After reading the reviews of the top sellers, although mostly good, I couldn't help to think of the hassle if I were one of the few who got the leaky malfunctioning machine.

I'm so glad to have come across the Java Wand. At first glance it looks to be a novelty. But there couldn't be a more simple way to make a good cup of coffee. I find drinking our of the straw fun and it really does spare your teeth. I was worried about how I was going to sip a hot cup of coffee through a straw. I don't know if the glass tempers the coffee or what, but so far so good. And less cleanup than a coffee maker.

Great concept but poor design!3
I ordered 2 wands... they work great but they did not last very long. The fragile glass straws are very long and extend past the cup edge about 4" and are awkward to drink from. The first one broke when my cup was sitting on the kitchen counter and my daughters sleeve got caught on the protruding straw and knocked it to the ground! The second one broke while doing dishes. I was a bit disappointed since they did work so my husband took the little filter off the bottom and went to the hardware store to look for a replacement straw. He came back with an aluminum tube version and a clear flexible acrylic tube version. My favorite is the clear tube and think that this should have been how they designed it in the first place. It is flexible, light weight and can be cut to any length!

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review
One of the most comforting sounds in the world is the bubbling of a coffee percolator at work. And then comes the toasty aroma--it makes for a perfect morning. Percolators have come back to home kitchens, and the Presto 12-cup stainless steel coffee maker is a prime example. Its elegant, hotel-style design brings a touch of luxury to what is for many a daily pleasure.

This coffee maker brews up to twelve cups of coffee at a cup-a-minute rate, which it then keeps at a constant, piping-hot serving temperature. An indicator light in the base announces when the coffee is ready. The inner fixtures--the filter basket and perk tube--are also made of stainless steel, rather than the more common (and less durable) aluminum. The power cord is removable to make storage simple.

Before cleaning the coffee maker, unplug the unit and allow it to cool completely. Wash the coffee maker with warm, sudsy water and dry it thoroughly; it is not immersible. To preserve the gloss of the stainless steel, do not use steel wool or harsh, abrasive cleansers. The perk spout and filter basket can be cleaned with a brush or pipe cleaner. If necessary, coffee stain remover can be used periodically on the interior surface. The coffee maker measures 10 by 5 by 13 inches (including handle, lid, and spout). Presto guarantees this product with a one-year limited warranty. A simple instruction sheet is enclosed. --Garland Withers

Sure beats the other brands5
I thought my Hamilton Beach percolator was decent for the price, I even wrote a review about it in December, 2006. One week later, this 1-year old coffee maker was barely keeping the coffee hot. Then I visited my son in Alaska at Christmas and noticed that his 6-yr old Presto percolator was still delivering great, hot coffee in record time. I returned home, ordered my Presto 12-cup percolator and am highly impressed. It's lighter, easier to load, easier to pour, easier to clean, perks ultra-fast and makes a great, hot cup of coffee. Because of its lighter stainless steel pot, it cools down faster if you want to make a second batch of coffee right away. (We make two pots and pour the first batch into a thermos for back-up when company comes) Based on its performance, I'm surprised the price is so reasonable.

Simplicity5
I've used every type of coffee maker around. I look for all stainless- that means NO plastic or aluminum contacting the water----this has been a great product for me--I love perked coffee. When I'm not using this I use a Cona glass vacuum maker--- I'm a purist about materials and coffee making. Presto has been the most reliable of all my electric percs. It's all stainless.

Great coffee5
After using drip coffee makers for many years, we decided to buy a percolator. We are wondering why we waited so long to go back to the percolator. The coffee is great and it is hot and stays hot.

Customer Reviews

Cheap like me? Yeah, you're gonna like this too...4
Being frugal (all right, cheap) by nature, I held off on buying a single-serve coffeemaker until I could find one I liked that offered a reusable filter. When Keurig came out with the B-40 Elite, a handsome, reasonably priced unit, and announced that it would be releasing its "My K-Cup" reusable filter for separate sale early in 2006, I was primed. As soon as I saw this product on Keurig's website, I was ready to buy my new coffeemaker from Amazon.com and the filter from Keurig's web site. My only wish was that Amazon.com would stock the reusable filter so buyers could purchase the coffeemaker and filter in one fell swoop, and here my wish is about to come to pass!

I have had my Keurig B-40 Elite for about a month now, and I've had great success with it. Bear in mind that if you're using the reusable filter, you must first remove the black plastic K-Cup holder from the unit's filter assembly (instructions on how to do this are included with "My K-Cup"; the black piece in the coffeemaker's filter basket doesn't act like it's supposed to come out, but it is, and it does).

Also, I've read elsewhere that some people don't like having to remove the reusable filter and clean it out after every use. However, I've found it to be a relatively simple affair: the reusable filter doesn't drip when you remove it, and takes about 30 seconds to rinse out after each use. You can use it again right away to brew successive cups.

One caveat is that the output splashes a bit when using the My K-Cup filter, so I always have a damp paper towel at the ready when I brew a cup. That having been said, I'm really happy to be using my own coffee and saving lots of money in the process. Those who are, like me, loathe to shell out 55 cents a cup for K-Cups will probably really like the new My K-Cup.

Here's a tip for stronger coffee4
After reading many reviews about the problems with the My K-Cup and experimenting on my own, I have found an easy solution to the problem of weak coffee using this filter. As others have noted, the water goes through the My K-Cup way too fast as compared to the K-Cups. My solution was to take apart a K-Cup and use the outer plastic shell with the My K-Cup filter. Here's all you need to do:

Take a used K-Cup and cut the top foil off of a K-Cup. Cut the paper filter out of the K-Cup. It's okay not to cut it all the way off of the rim of the K-Cup because you will need to cut the top of the K-Cup (where it gets wider at the top). You need to cut the top of the K-Cup off because you need to fit the K-Cup shell into the My K-Cup holder. Once you slide the bottom shell of the K-Cup into the holder, you can add your coffee into the My K-Cup (tapping or gently pressing the coffee so that it is not loose inside the filter). Then place the My K-Cup filter into the holder and cover as normal. When brewing, the K-Cup shell surrounds the My K-Cup filter and slows down the water by making it pass through the punctured hole that the prepackaged K-Cup normally uses.

The great thing about this is that you can re-use the K-Cup shell that you cut apart over and over so once you have cut one apart you don't have to worry about it again- use the My K-Cup as you normally would.

I'm hoping Keurig will have figured this out in the near future and add a premade piece that is included the My K-Cup, but until then, I have found that this solves the problem of weak coffee.

Easy to Use and Environmentally Responsible!4
Let me start out by saying that I love my Keurig brewer. It brews a great cup of coffee (GMCR Dark Magic is my fav) and the convenience can't be beat. However, I've always felt a little guilty every time I throw out a used K-Cup. It seems like they're not only completely UNrecycleable, but totally UNbiodegradeable as well.

Enter the My K-Cup reuseable filter. Yes, it takes a little practice to fill up the mesh filter with grounds without making a total mess, and sure it takes a few seconds of rinsing when finished. But the result is a great cup of coffee and no guilt trip about filling the landfill with punched out K-Cups. And if you're feeling reckless, it's an easy switch back to those good ol' prefab cups.

I'd recommend this to anyone with a compatible brewer. It's not that much more of a hassle to use, the results are excellent, and there's no waste. Oh yeah, it's also a whole lot cheaper to fill these with your favorite pre-ground GMCR blend (Dark Magic baby!) than to buy the equivalent number of cups.

The only negative that I've seen is a tendency for more "sludge" to get through to the bottom of your cup. Watch that last sip, it's a doosy!

Customer Reviews

Excellent - sized just right for a single person!5
Bought a 8oz single cup coffee maker the other day, but
was displeased with it, was not enough to fill my coffee mug.
It was just enough to fill a tea sized cup.

I then bought this unit, that provides 15oz of coffee.
Fills my coffee mug with a little left over.
Note: you can add just a tad more water, to provide
two cups of 8oz coffee.

Very well constructed unit, and also looks great on the counter.
Also take note, it does shut off automatically once coffee
finishes brewing, which is approximately a quick 2 1/2 minutes.

Works well, and makes a great cup of coffee.

does everthing I need it to5
I'm a college student, so I was interested in something cheap and compact, but still functional.

This coffee maker is a BREEZE to clean, just rinse out the permanent filter-no other mess involved) even for someone as lazy as me, and works impressively fast. I am still in awe of the fact that seconds after I turn it on, it is pouring HOT HOT coffee into my cup. It is also a simple enough design that I can trust my roommates to use it without worrying they'll break it...(and also cheap enough that it wouldn't matter terribly if they did)

The only other mug I have used with it is as tall as the one included and I would caution against using a cup/mug that isn't tall, as I suspect there would be some splatter.

Another feature I love is that it is incredibly easy to use it as a water-heater; even if you need more than 15 oz., it works fast enough that you can just use it multiple times.

All in all, I am completely satisfied and have no complaints whatsoever. (I have had it for about a month, during which I've used it about 4 times a week)

VERY HIGH energy costs4
Bunn Coffee Makers are very high quality coffee makers, and one typically needs to spend money to get this kind of quality. However, there are a few costs you should be aware of before you purchase a Bunn Coffee Maker. I'm not saying that it may not be worth it to you, but you may as well know all of the costs before purchasing.

They both have to do with how Bunn delivers such a fast pot - 3 minutes as opposed to 4-8 minutes of other makers. The first way they do it is to have what amounts to two sets of water tanks: one you fill, and the other is preheated. The preheated water tank is delivered to the spray head, and because it is preheated, it doesn't require any time to heat it up. The problem is that it is preheated 24/7, and that can be costly. I'm guessing they use a 100 watt heater. If it takes 15-30 cents per day in energy costs, you are looking at $50-$100 per year. You can, after you are done brewing for the day, shut off the "vacation switch" which is the switch to the tank heater, and this will save the cost and energy, but if you forget to turn it back on at least 15 minutes ahead of when you need it, you are looking at a 15 minute wait for the tank to reheat before you can brew.

Furthermore, if you are having guests, if you brew a pot of caffinated, followed by a pot of decaf, you may need to wait 15 minutes between pots. The Bunn commercial brewers keep three preheated tanks, so this isn't a problem for them. But the consumer models keep only one tank preheated.

Note that they work on gravity: the water you put in pushes the preheated water out. Some of the preheated water will evaporate, so you have to put in more water than you want out.

The second thing they do to get a fast brew is to increase the amount of water that pours in to the filter basket, far greater than other coffee makers. The amount of water would collapse other filters, but because these filters are taller and sturdier, they stand up. But that means you are stuck with their filters, which, if you don't have a supply nearby, and few stores carry them, means paying for the filters plus shipping.

Bunn builds coffee makers to last, unlike other coffee makers that will wear out after a year or two. Virtually all programmable models seem to only last a year or two. So by buying this brand, you'll save money on coffee makers, to partly make up for the extra energy and filter costs.

You'll have to decide whether the extra energy and filter costs (which can be dealt with, but might be troublesome) are worth saving the cost of buying a new machine every couple of years.

Next, the carbon footprint of a machine that consistently wastes energy is somewhat (but not all) counterbalanced by the fact that it is made in America, and does not require shipping halfway around the world like some of the better brands. Additionally, these coffee makers will easily outlast 5x other coffee makers, and that's a lot of plastic you save buy buying something only once.

Finally, the quality of coffee from a flat bottom filter is generally not as high as that you can get from a cone filter, though the differences will be subtle, and if you are used to the flavor of a flat bottom filter, then you may never care. This brand is considered the best of the flat bottom makers, so there may not be as much of a difference as there are for other brands.

As for the heated base keeping your coffee hot, it is also *ruining* the flavor from almost the very first minute. Any real coffee geek will immediately take the pot off the heater and pour it into a thermal carafe or thermos or will order a model with a thermal carafe to start with. Ideally, there is no heated base at all. So people complaining that it doesn't keep the coffee hot should invest in a thermal carafe or buy a model that comes with one.

In summary, the design of these coffee makers is suited to the standard donut shop, where they are brewing coffee around the clock and it is worth it to them to keep extra tanks of water heated so that they can shave 1-3 minutes off the brew time during their peak buying periods. Whether it is worth it for a consumer who makes one or two pots of coffee in the morning to do something like this is something only you can answer for yourself. They are very good coffee makers: well built and they make good coffee. But they cost a lot in terms of energy and filters, though partly balanced by the reduction in number of coffee makers you'll buy over the life of this product and the local nature of the product that reduces the energy required to ship them. It's one thing to have a high cost, but to have the high energy waste these coffee makers will generate for most consumers is something everyone should think about.

Consider the long term cost AND coffee quality 5
We just bought this Bunn coffee maker to replace one that had been in use for almost fifteen years. We average two pots of coffee per day. Prorate $100 over 15 years. Not real expensive per year. Our old Bunn failed because I didn't use common sense when handling it. I picked up the unit by the upper plastic portion of the coffee maker when moving it for cleaning, etc. With the water in the reservoir there's too much weight to pick it up that way. This broke some of the internal joints and caused leaking. Be smarter than me...pick it up by the base or vertical center section when its full of water. That's the main thing I wanted to say to those owning this coffee maker.
The other reviewers have stated all the great features of Bunn coffee makers, so I won't detail them again. This is our third Bunn and I wouldn't consider anything else. Well.....to be honest, I was tempted to buy a Bunn commercial coffee maker like the VP17-1. Good luck.

Simply amazing - fast5
It was that time again; time to search for our next coffee maker. Being tired of replacing the coffee maker every 6 months we set out to look closer at build quality and read more reviews this time. We purchased three other coffee makers by a company that's been around forever, Mr. Something. Nice looking, fancy green LED dial display with a timer, 12 cups, programmable, 2 hour auto shut off etc. for around $40-$50. Those machines only lasted around 6-7 months.

I always wanted a Bunn but was hesitant spending $100+ for a coffee maker again. Actually, I don't recall seeing a BUNN for around $100 the last time I shopped. It's not that spending $100+ was something new for me; I purchased other machines over $100 before but was also disappointed.

This coffee maker purchasing was beginning to be a regular thing for us so the line of thought was purchase a cheap one and replace it. So that is what we did but its costly doing that too. Buy a new machine in Jan. then June then again around Christmas time, that's $150 right there! I remember thinking the last time; we should buy two so when it breaks we have a backup.

So anyway, we have the BUNN NHBX. The experience setting this machine up was unlike any other coffee machine in the past. I actually had to follow directions, 5 simple steps but IMPORTANT STEPS. It's not like you just plug this machine in and go, 3 minutes later - drink coffee. It does require some initial setup, approximately 20-30 minutes from opening the box. Bunn includes a quick setup guide in addition to a nice manual and a deliming tool. Adding 3 pots of water to the machine seemed odd at first not fully understanding the hot water reservoir design.

This machine makes the best tasting pot of coffee of all the machines I owned in the past. It's also the hottest pot! The warmer plate seems unnecessary. This machine made coffee as quick as 2 min 35 secs up to 3 mins.

french press4
This french press takes coffee to the next level. There were a few minor dents at the top and it leaks a small amount when you try to pour too fast, so i don't. It was used so i didn't expect perfect. If you preheat with boiling water the coffee stays hot for several hours. The knob on top turns and blocks the screen after plunging so what's left doesn't get much stronger. A clever idea.

It's a hit!5
Purchased this beautifully designed stainless steel French press for my husband, since I broke his last two glass carafes. (Accidents, I swear!) He loves it, and the coffee is superb. I really like both the look of it, and it sits out on our counter even when not in use--puts regular coffee makers to shame. Cleaning it has been a breeze, and it seems to do a much better job of filtering the fine grounds than other French presses I've used.

Good small cup coffee maker4
I ordered the coffee maker because it accepts a tall cup unlike the one that I currently use at work. The downside, however, iis that it makes only an 8 ounce cup. Overall, it is worth the money and a good buy.

Hamilton Beach 40540 Brew Station 40-Cup Coffee Urn, Silver

Product Description

The Hamilton Beach® BrewStation® 40 Cup urn offers one-hand dispensing, so there is no need to put down a buffet or party plate to fill up a cup of coffee. In a busy buffet line, that means cups can be filled faster, saving time and reducing crowding. Disposable cups are never a problem, either - the dispensing button was designed to work with foam as well as classic ceramic cups. For added convenience, the dispensing area has a higher cup clearance than most urns and the drip tray removes for easy cleaning. The last drops of a 40-cup coffee urn have rarely tasted as good until now. In the BrewStation® urn, a powerful center heater brews the entire tank quickly (45 seconds per cup versus the normal 60 seconds). Once brewed, the center heater shuts down and a gentle, keep-warm heater maintains a perfect temperature without scorching the coffee. Coffee tastes great longer, from the first cup to the last.

Great coffee first time!5
I just made delicious coffee for a crowd with this. I have never made percolator coffee. I think I put in too much coffee but it came out very well. I got a 13 oz can of some sort of smooth & mellow decaf coffee from Trader Joe's and I got it very coarse ground. I used the whole can for a full urn of water (up to the 40 mark). I read that you use 1 pound for 2 gallons of water as a catering standard. The urn is about 80% of 2 gallons, so 13 oz seemed right. It was more than the directions for the urn, but I decided to wing it. I'm really glad that I did! It was excellent, even a couple of hours later. The keep warm setting is great and the coffee is nice and hot and NOT overdone. I would recommend that you get a light-medium roasted coffee and grind it coarsely in the store.

My husband asked me to save the rest, which he never does when I get the Peet's catered coffee, so it is sitting in the fridge ready to make iced coffee!

Good Coffee5
This is the second Bunn Coffee Brewer We have had, The first one lasted 10 years. I wouldn't buy any other brand.

Best coffee maker ever.5
I have found this to be the best I have ever owned. My daughter had gotten one and finally my old one conked out and I just had to have a Bunn also. I envied my daughter's ability to make coffee in literally three minutes. I used to only have 12-cup capacity pots but there is no need for it now. The best is that you can always have a "fresh" cup of coffee and it is always hot. It makes a "clean" cup of coffee easily and efficiently. We are thrilled with this product and highly recommend it anyone and everyone. This will be our brand of coffee maker forever.

Great Unit5
Much the same as one I owned over twenty years ago. Why (fix) change the design if it doesn't need changing (fixing). The only difference between the old Model & the new one is that there is a switch in the cover that allows you time to pour the water into unit & then place the pot underneath. Also it seems cheaper material is now being used.
Keeps water hot all the time (except there is a vacation off switch) so you are able to make coffee in about three minutes.
Real nice unit.

quick good coffee5
As a fan of "perked" coffee I was somewhat skeptical about the Keurig, but I was wrong. It makes a good cup of coffee and it is fast. The only problem I would say, is that the coffee could be a bit hotter. Other than that I am not disappointed at all.

Fab! So Many Uses5
My Keurig Elite B70 arrived from Amazon in just 1 1/2 days. Not only does it easily "fine tune" to my temperature and cup size preferences, but I use it for cooking too.
The B70 Elite, makes PERFECT coffee, tea, and hot chocolate in less than a minute and fills my "super-size mug" to the top simply by pushing the 11 1/2 oz fill and the 4 oz fill! The K-cups can become expensive, so I use my own ground coffee with the reusable mesh filter that can be added to your purchase at Amazon, and it is delicious. I use my Keurig to quickly make a cup of hot water for baking, for making bullion in recipes, even instant mashed potatoes. This is a wonderful kitchen helper!

Better than I thought it would be5
I like coffee from Starbucks, to give you a point of reference. I typically drink their regular (not bold roast) with cream and sugar. I do not drink 'cheap' coffee - I hate it. At home we use an old fashioned percolator which can make some strong stuff. We grind our own beans fresh.
What I expected from this machine was a convenient, maybe tolerable, maybe not tolerable cup of coffee.
The first cup was a bold serving and it was actually good, almost as good as the percolator. Really surprising. The serving size was also a concern, but it appears to be pretty good. This will probably not be economical because now I will drink way more than the one cup a day I have been. Definitely would recommend this unit.

Nice tea maker, needs some improvement3
Like the title says, the tea maker I bought from Mr Coffee needs just a little bit of improvement.

I've had my tea maker several months now and there's 1 problem which makes it part inconvience, part mess maker: Just under the spout, where the plastic starts to flare out has started to crack vertically, so that every time I make tea now, I have to sponge up the tea that has slipped through the cracks.

This is going to make me buy another pitcher, but if this one doesn't last well, I plan on ditching it and finding one that will last, under normal conditions.

Superb!5
What a great deal! I received 2 pitchers for less than what 1 would cost me @ Wal-Mart! Thanks Again, Jenn

Mr. Coffee TP-30 Iced Tea Picther5
YOU WERE THE LAST PLACE I LOOKED TO FIND THE TEA PICTHERS I NEEDED. I DO NOT KNOW WHY I DECIDED TO LOOK HERE BUT AM GLAD I DID. FROM NOW ON YOU WILL BE THE FIRST PLACE I LOOK.

Great combo product.4
Makes a good cup of coffee and the espresso machine part is easy to use and does a good job. I really like the built in milk frother. As long as you rinse it right away it is easy to clean and makes perfectly frothed milk everytime! The 1/5 feature allows you to make a half a pot of coffee that still tastes good.

Carafe wrong size5
I lost the manual for my coffee pot. I ordered this one as a replacement because it looked just like the one that I broke. It didn't fit my coffee maker..The "raised bump" in the middle of the lid was too short. (Lesson..make sure you have the right part number before you order!)I paid a total of $6 for return shipment. I called Cuisinart, they gave me the replacement carafe number, then it wasn't available on Amazon.

In all, I ended up paying $36 and recieved a new carafe from Cuisinart. Was it worth the price? Yes. I think so! My coffee pot is very sturdy and makes excellent coffee!

OK5
We keep breaking 'em. Good thing we can get these new ones easily and quickly.
